What Is Scrap Gold Actually Worth? A Straight Answer

"Scrap gold" sounds like an insult. It isn't — and broken gold is worth exactly the same per gram as unbroken gold.

"Scrap gold" sounds like an insult. It isn't. In the trade it just means gold that's being valued for its metal content rather than as a finished piece of jewelry — and that covers most of what people bring us.

The important thing to understand up front: broken gold is worth the same per gram as unbroken gold. A snapped chain and a perfect chain of identical weight and karat produce an identical offer. Condition is irrelevant to melt value.

What counts as scrap gold

Pretty much anything solid gold that isn't worth more as jewelry:

  • Broken or knotted chains, and loose links
  • Single earrings, and earrings missing their backs
  • Bent, cut or worn-through rings
  • Class rings, especially heavy ones
  • Dental gold — crowns, bridges, inlays (yes, really, and there's no need to be squeamish about it)
  • Pins, brooches and pendants with the stones missing
  • Clasps, jump rings, chain findings
  • Mismatched cufflinks
  • Gold watch cases with the movement gone
  • Pieces you simply don't like anymore

If it's solid gold and you're not going to wear it, it's scrap — and it's money.

How the number is calculated

Three steps, and you should be able to watch all three:

1. Sort by karat. 10K, 14K, 18K, 21K and 22K each go in their own pile. This matters enormously — see below.

2. Test each pile. Acid testing, electronic testing, or XRF depending on the piece. This confirms the stamp is honest and catches unmarked gold that's actually real.

3. Weigh each pile and apply that karat's rate. Pure gold is 24K. 14K is 58.3% gold, so a gram of 14K contains 0.583 grams of actual gold. The rate follows the purity.

Then the piles are added up into one total.

The mixed-lot trap

Here's the thing that costs people the most money, and it happens quietly.

If a buyer weighs your whole mixed bag as one lot, they will pay the lowest karat rate on all of it. Your 18K gets paid as though it were 10K.

Picture a 50-gram bag: 20 grams of 10K, 20 grams of 14K, 10 grams of 18K. Sorted correctly, each portion earns its own rate. Weighed as a single 50-gram 10K lot, you lose a meaningful chunk of the total — often several hundred dollars at current gold levels.

Ask directly: "Are you sorting this by karat before you weigh it?" The answer tells you a lot about where you're standing.

What's not scrap gold (and it's worth knowing)

Several things look like gold and aren't:

  • Gold-filled (GF), gold-plated (GP), HGE, RGP, 1/20 12K — a thin gold layer over base metal. Negligible melt value. We'll tell you straight rather than paying you a token amount for it.
  • Gold-tone costume jewelry — no gold at all.
  • Gold-plated flatware and serving pieces — usually plated over silver or steel.
  • "Gold" coins from TV offers and collector mints — frequently gold-plated base metal. Real gold coins state their weight and fineness on the coin itself.

Bring it anyway. We'd rather test it and hand it back than have you throw away something real.

Things that are worth more than scrap — don't melt these

Part of an honest buyer's job is pulling things out of the scrap pile:

  • Gold coins, always. Even common bullion coins carry a premium above melt, and dated collector coins can be worth many multiples of it.
  • Designer pieces — Tiffany, Cartier, David Yurman, Bulgari. The signature is often worth more than the metal.
  • Solid gold watch cases from known brands. A gold Rolex is never a melt item.
  • Antique and Victorian jewelry with real craftsmanship.
  • Anything with a substantial diamond or colored stone still in it.
  • Vintage charm bracelets with mechanical or enamel charms.

If someone weighs a signed Tiffany bracelet straight into the scrap pile without comment, that's a problem. We pull those aside and tell you what they are.

What a full junk drawer is typically worth

People consistently underestimate this, so here are realistic weights:

  • A typical single tangled chain: 4–20 grams
  • A men's class ring: 6–15 grams
  • A handful of assorted single earrings: 10–25 grams
  • A men's signet or nugget ring: 8–25 grams
  • A loaded charm bracelet: 30–60 grams
  • A "whole junk drawer" bag: commonly 20–80 grams of mixed karat

At current gold levels, 50 grams of mixed 10K/14K is a genuinely significant amount of money. That's why we tell everyone: bring the whole bag, not the three pieces you think are the good ones.

Should I remove the stones first?

No. Please don't.

Prying stones out of a setting usually damages the metal, and you risk losing a stone that had real value. We deduct the weight of non-gold stones when we weigh — that's normal and it's a small adjustment — and if any of the stones are worth paying for, we tell you and pay for them separately.

Let the people with the loupe and the tweezers do it.

How to sell scrap gold without getting shorted

  1. Weigh it at home first on a cheap digital scale.
  2. Bring all of it, including the pieces you assume are worthless.
  3. Insist on sorting by karat before anything goes on the scale.
  4. Watch the test and the scale. Both should happen at the counter, facing you.
  5. Ask for the per-gram rate at each karat, not just a lump-sum offer.
  6. Get a second offer in writing and bring it back to whoever you prefer.
  7. Don't clean or repair anything beforehand.

Sell it or pawn it?

Scrap gold is usually a sell — it's broken, you're not wearing it, and there's no sentimental case for keeping a snapped chain in a drawer.

But if a piece matters to you and you just need cash for a few weeks, a pawn loan on gold is straightforward. The value is objective, it's stored securely, and it's yours again when you repay.
